Grammatical information: Nom. acc. n.Meaning: `fat, tallow' (ep. Ion. Il).Derivatives: πίων, n. πῖον, f. πίειρα `fat, fertile, rich' (Il.), with as innovation πιερός, πιαρός `id.' (Hp., Arist.); comp. forms πιό-τατος, - τερος (Hom.) with new posit. πῖος (Epich., Nic.; cf. Leumann Mus. Helv. 2,5f. = Kl. Schr. 219); πιότης f. `fattness' (Hp., Arist.). Poet. enlargement πιήεις `id.' (AP). Denom. verb πιαίνω, aor. πιᾶναι, also w. δια-, κατα- a.o., `to make fat, to tallow, to enrich' (Pi., IA.) with πία-σμα n. `fattening, tallowing food' (A.), ποτι-πίαμμα n. ` fat that stayed (on the altar)' (Cyrene; on the phonetics cf. Schwyzer 524 w. n. 2), - σμός m. `fattening' (Ael.); - ντήριος (Hp.), - ντικός (Apoll. Lex.) `making fat, tallowing'. -- With λ-suffix: πιαλέος `fat' (Ion. poet.; Chantraine Form. 253), rarely πίαλος `id.' (v. l. for σίαλος [Hp.], prob. reshaped after it; cf. Güntert Reimwortbild. 127 f., where wrong on πιαλέος). -- On itself stands πιμελ-ή f. `fat, lard' (IA) with - ώδης `fatty' (Hp., Arist.), - ής `id.' (Aq., Luc.).Origin: IE [Indo-European] [793] *piH-u̯er- `fat'Etymology: With πίων, πίειρα from *πίϜων, *πίϜειρα agree Skt. pī́van-, pī́varī `fat, full'; with the r-stem in πῖ[F]αρ agrees in Indo-Iran. an s-stem Skt. pī́vas- = Av. pī́vah- n. `fat, bacon'. To it, as Ind. innovation, pīvará like πιερός to πίειρα. Here still Myc. PN pi-we-ri-di, -si (Heubeck Praegraeca 42)? An old r-derivation is also supposed in OIr. īriu `earth's surface, land' (phonetically unclear). The l-stem in πιαλέος however is not found outside Greek. An old athemat. byform may be found in Epeirotic gen. sg. Πείαλ-ος (Schwyzer 484 w. lit.). -- Beside this group with the wellknown suffixvariation u̯er: u̯en: u̯es: u̯el (e.g. Benveniste Origines 45 f.; IE *pī-u̯er-, -u̯r̥- etc.) stands with mel-suffix πῑ-μελ-ή (Frisk Eranos 41, 50ff.). (The m-formation contained in it seems also to be found in Lat. opīmus `fat, wellnourished' but the anlaut. o- is unexplained.) -- All these formations go back on a verb, which is retained in Skt., e.g. pres. páyate `be full', esp. of fat or milk, ptc. pīná- `obese, thick'. On the Skt. words extensively Mayrhofer KEWA 212 a. 297 f. w. lit.; on the group in gen. (in a verse); h aldorð í bug skj aldi, Fms. vi. (in a verse); h aldir fast ok skj aldi, Kormak: plur. skildir; acc. skjöldu, mod. skildi: [Ulf. skildus = θυρεός, Ephes. vi. 16; Dan. skjold; Swed. sköld; common to all Teut. languages: it is commonly derived from skjól, shelter, although the short root vowel and the final d of skild speak against this: ‘skillingr’ or ‘skildingr’ ( a shilling) may be a derivative from ‘skildus,’ from the shape, and from the painted or scratched ‘ring’ on the shields; see below: in fact, an old poet (Bragi) calls the shield ‘the penny of the hall of Odin.’]A. A shield, the generic name; the special names are, rönd, rít, baugr, targa, lind; þeir höfðu ekki langa skjöldu, Fas. i. 379; góðan skjöld ok þjökkan á hálsi, Sks. 407; skjöld á hlið, Bjarn. 62, and so in countless instances.II. special phrases; halda skildi fyrir e-m (e-n), to hold one’s shield, as a second in a holmganga, Glúm. 332, Korm. 88; or, fyrir e-n, Ísl. ii. 257; era héra at borgnara þótt hæna beri skjöld, Fms. vii. 116: hafa e-n at skildi, to have another as one’s shield, i. e. seek shelter behind him, Nj. 8; bera efra skjöld, to carry the highest shield, gain the day, Fas. i. 383, Fms. x. 394: þjóna undir þann skjöld, to serve under that shield, that standard, vii. 293; þjóna undir sama skjöld, viii. 109: binda öllum jafnan skjöld, to tie the same shield to all, treat all in one fashion (metaphor from a withy-shield?), Clem. 44: leika tveim skjöldum, to play with two shields, play a double game (metaphor from the red and white shields, see B), Am. 70, Hkr. i. (in a verse): koma í opna skjöldu, to fall into the open (hollow) shield, to attack in flank ( from the left), Fms. vi. 408, Stj. 365, Eg. 295, Fb. ii. 123; rennir sá maðr í kirkjugarð, ok sækir þingat skjöld, and seeks protection there, N. G. L. i. 352; múrr ok skjöldr, Mar.III. of any shield-formed thing; tólgar-s., a round piece of tallow; also of shield-like spots on cattle or whales: of a white tablet in churches, Vm. 142, 162, 168, Ám. 55, Pm. 17: brjóst-skjöldr, a round brooch.IV. a pr. name, Nj., Hkr. (of the son of Odin, the ancestor of the Danish kings); Skjöldungar, Edda; Skjöldr Skánunga goð, Fb. iii. 246.COMPDS: skjaldarband, skjaldarbukl, skjaldarfetill, skjaldarjötunn, skjaldarrönd, skjaldarskirfl, skjaldarsporðr.B. Remarks on the shield.—A shield was raised as a signal in time of war; a red shield betokened war (rauðr skjöldr, her-skjöldr), a white shield peace (hvítr skjöldr, friðar-skjöldr, a peace-shield); in a battle the red shield was hoisted, Hkv. 1. 33; but, bregða upp friðar skildi, to hoist the (white) shield of peace, was a sign that the battle was to cease; hann lét skjóta upp skildi hvítum, Fagrsk. 6l, Fms. vii. 23; hence also the phrase, bera herskjöld, or, fara herskildi, to harry, overrun a land with the ‘war shield,’ see frið-skjöldr and her-skjöldr (s. v. herr). War ships were lined from stem to stern with a wall of shields,—skip skarat skjöldum, or skjaldat skip; hann kom í Bjarnar-fjörð með al-skjölduðu skipi, síðan var hann Skjaldar-Björn kallaðr, Landn. 156. The halls of the ancients were hung all round with a row of shields, Gm. 9, Edda 2, Eg. 43, see the curious story in Fas. iii. 42. For the shield-wall in battles see skjald-borg. Ancient sayings; nú er skarð fyrir skildi, now there is a gap for a shield, a breach in the fence, of a heavy loss, such as the death of a person, nú er skarð fyrir skildi, nú er svanrinn nár á Tjörn, Jón Þorl.; höggva skarð í skildi e-s, to cut a notch in one’s shield, inflict a severe blow, Orkn. (in a verse). Shields were furnished with a painted or carved ‘ring’ representing mythological or heroic subjects; these rings are the earliest works of Northern art on record, hence come the names rít, baugr, rönd, of which rít points to scratching (whereas Bragi used ‘fá’ = to paint); rauðum skildi, rönd var ór gulli, Hkv. 1. 33. Such shields were a lordly gift, and gave rise to several ancient poems treating of the subjects carved or painted on the shield, such as the famous Haust-löng by Thjodolf, the Ragnars-kviða by Bragi, the two Beru-drápur (Shield-songs) by Egill; these ‘shield-lays’ were afterwards the sources of the writer of the Edda, but only a few fragments are preserved; (cp. the Greek lay on ‘the shield of Heracles,’ and the lay on Achilles’ shield in the Iliad.) -
13 Lever, William Hesketh
[br]b. 19 September 1851 Bolton, Lancashire, Englandd. 7 May 1925 Hampstead, London, England[br]English manufacturer of soap.[br]William Hesketh Lever was the son of the retail grocer James Lever, who built up the large wholesale firm of Lever \& Co. in the north-west of England. William entered the firm at the age of 19 as a commercial traveller, and in the course of his work studied the techniques of manufacture and the quality of commercial soaps available at the time. He decided that he would concentrate on the production of a soap that was not evil-smelling, would lather easily and be attractively packaged. In 1884 he produced Sunlight Soap, which became the trade mark for Lever \& Co. He had each tablet wrapped, partly to protect the soap from oxygenization and thus prevent it from becoming rancid, and partly to display his brand name as a form of advertising. In 1885 he raised a large capital sum, purchased the Soap Factory in Warrington of Winser \& Co., and began manufacture. His product contained oils from copra, palm and cotton blended with tallow and resin, and its quality was carefully monitored during production. In a short time it was in great demand and began to replace the previously available alternatives of home-made soap and poor-quality, unpleasant-smelling bars.It soon became necessary to expand the firm's premises, and in 1887 Lever purchased fifty-six acres of land upon which he set up a new centre of manufacture. This was in the Wirral in Cheshire, near the banks of the River Mersey. Production at the new factory, which was called Port Sunlight, began in January 1889. Lever introduced a number of technical improvements in the production process, including the heating systems and the recovery of glycerine (which could later be sold) from the boiling process.Like Sir Titus Salt of Saltaire before him, Lever believed it to be in the interest of the firm to house his workers in a high standard of building and comfort close to the factory.By the early twentieth century he had created Port Sunlight Village, one of the earliest and certainly the most impressive housing estates, for his employees. Architecturally the estate is highly successful, being built from a variety of natural materials and vernacular styles by a number of distinguished architects, so preventing an overall architectural monotony. The comprehensive estate comprises, in addition to the factory and houses, a church, an art gallery, schools, a cottage hospital, library, bank, fire station, post office and shops, as well as an inn and working men's institute, both of which were later additions. In 1894 Lever \& Co. went public and soon was amalgamated with other soap firms. It was at its most successful high point by 1910.[br]Principal Honours and DistinctionsFirst Viscount Leverhulme of the Western Isles.Further Reading1985, Dictionary of Business Biography. 16 matanza
(Sp. model spelled same [matánsa] < matar 'to kill; to slaughter,' probably from Vulgar Latin * mattare 'to strike, to knock down' < mattum 'stupid; brutalized')The slaughtering of cattle, or the slaughterhouse itself. Blevins indicates that in Spanish California this term referred especially to "the killing of cattle for hides and tallow." The DRAE defines it as the process of killing pigs, extracting the bacon, making use of the loin and other parts, and the making of blood sausage. It also refers in Spanish to the portion of livestock that is set apart for slaughtering. A Spanish synonym that shares the same root is matadero. -
